Abstract
Since long ago, the scholars have considered using one's intellect for explaining the divine knowledge. Similarly, in the Holy Quran, making use of the intellect has been stressed upon. The terms taʿqilūn and tadabbarūn and the like are found in many verses, which shows the Quran's attention to the faculty of intellect. Considering the importance and position of the intellect in Islamic teachings, we have investigated intellectualism in the Quran from Arkoun's view and that of Allamah Tabataba'i in a comparative manner by gathering library data. We then concluded that Arkoun considers the concept of the intellect in the Quran as something different from the argumentative intellect. He classifies the Islamic concept of intellect into three periods of 'formation of the Islamic thought', 'Islamic classic period', and 'scholastic period', maintaining that the Islamic intellect follows the revelation, and the term ʿaql in the Quran refers to emotional and metaphoric notions that cannot be argued. Besides, after the revelation of the Quran, the heads of the Islamic denominations have transferred the divine knowledge to the next generation with no argumentation. Allamah Tabataba'i, however, interprets the Quranic intellect as conformed to human nature.
