Self-awareness is among the most fundamental issues in the philosophy of mind, and one of its principal debates concerns elucidating the relationship between the presence of the soul to itself, direct awareness of mental states, and conceptual reconsideration in light of experience. Despite the convergence of Ibn Sīnā’s theory of essential consciousness (shuʿūr bi-l-dhāt) and acquaintance theories in their emphasis on immediacy, the precise relationship between these two approaches and their respective roles in explaining the structure of self-awareness remains unclear. This research aims to conceptualize this relationship and to provide an integrative framework to elucidate the structure of self-awareness. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology alongside a conceptual and comparative analytical approach, this study examines the ontological and epistemological foundations of both theories. The findings demonstrate that the shared emphasis of the two approaches on the concept of immediacy does not denote their theoretical equivalence; for in the theory of essential consciousness, immediacy pertains to the ontological presence of the soul to itself, whereas in acquaintance theories, it refers to the epistemological relationship of the subject with mental states and phenomenal qualities. Accordingly, the article argues that the divergence between these two philosophical traditions does not lie in their response to a single problem, but rather in the level at which they explain self-awareness; presence (ḥuḍūr) serves as the ontological condition of possibility for acquaintance, and acquaintance, in turn, provides the foundation for interpretation and reflective self-awareness. Based on this analysis, the research formulates the “Three-Tiered Theory of Self-Awareness,” which elucidates the structure of self-awareness across three levels: presence, acquaintance, and interpretation. The novelty of this research lies in distinguishing ontological immediacy from epistemological immediacy, reconstructing the relationship between Avicennian philosophy and contemporary philosophy of mind based on a foundational relation, and presenting a unified model to explain the structure of self-awareness.
