The perspectives of Sadr al-Din al-Qunawi on mysticism and Sadr al-Din Shirazi (Mulla Sadra) on transcendent theosophy (al-Ḥekmat al-Mutaʿāliyah) are closely aligned on certain issues. However, in many respects, they differ or are even incompatible. One of the key issues that highlights the divergence between the perspectives of Sadr al-Din Shirazi and Sadr al-Din al-Qunawi is the discussion of Allah’s attributes. These two perspectives differ fundamentally: according to Sadr al-Din al-Qunawi, Allah’s attributes do not reside at the level of Allah's essence, whereas Sadr al-Din Shirazi posits that although these attributes have conceptual distinctions, their existence is identical to Allah’s. Furthermore, according to al-Qunawi, the attributes, in terms of existence, are virtual entities and, in terms of existential rank, are formed at two levels beyond Allah’s essence. However, according to Mulla Sadra (Sadr al-Muta'allihin), they are real entities and exist without any delay from the level of Allah’s essence. Ultimately, the superiority of the mystical perspective over the philosophical perspective is demonstrated.
