The philosophical view on the primordial existence of matter, while accepting its contingency by Islamic philosophers, has always faced criticisms, including the inconsistency of this view with certain apparent aspects of religious texts. This study aims to refute such doubts and provide a more precise understanding of the religious propositions regarding the creation of the material world. It employs an analytical and descriptive approach to examine prominent passages from the first sermon of Nahj al-Balagha on the creation of the world, based on Ayatollah Tabataba’i’ Tafsir al-Mizan. Ultimately, it seeks to reconcile the appearance of Imam Ali’s statements with the philosophical understanding of the creation of the world. The appearance of expressions in Nahj al-Balagha indicates the acceptance of the pre-existence of space and atmosphere before their separation. Imam Ali’s statement, on the antiquity and non-creation of the material world from nothingness, is consistent and, in this context, Ayatollah Tabatabaʾi’s interpretation of creation as the combination and separation of eternal matter into various forms and the negation of creation from non-existence can provide the best explanation for the contingency and creation of the material world while accepting its eternal existence. This approach avoids atheistic interpretations of contemporary science or opinions that are incompatible with the intellectual proof of other disciplines.
