For Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi, the production of religious knowledge is among the most pressing issues facing the Islamic system. It serves as the essential element that safeguards the Islamic character of the system and provides the foundation for its governance through religiously grounded frameworks. This study seeks to uncover and articulate Ayatollah Mesbah’s methodology for producing religious knowledge. He considers the possibility and necessity of religious knowledge specifically in the domain of normative human sciences, which are grounded in a value system and an ontological outlook: Normative sciences, by their very nature, are closely interrelated with ontological, epistemological, and axiological perspectives—areas in which Islam offers a distinctive framework. From his perspective, the process of attaining Islamic human sciences is a manageable and structured endeavor that requires both individual transformation and the reform of social structures. His theory integrates multiple epistemic approaches, including the purification and completion of existing sciences, ijtihād-based reasoning, and foundationalism in various forms. Methodologically, he outlines the production of religious knowledge in three stages: (1) critique of the foundations and outcomes of existing sciences, (2) establishment of four foundational principles for Islamic human sciences, and (3) development of applied philosophies tailored to sciences.
