This study investigates the state of coma from the perspective of philosophical ʿilm al-nafs (psychology), with a particular emphasis on the views of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā). The significance of this subject lies in elucidating the levels of human cognition in a comatose state to improve therapeutic approaches; relying on pure physiology has proven insufficient for analyzing and explaining all levels of human cognition. This study aims to evaluate human cognition in a coma by emphasizing the levels of consciousness within Avicennian ʿilm al-nafs. Methodologically, in the medical domain, it utilizes empirical laboratory data; in the philosophical domain, it relies on library-based research; and it additionally employs mathematical logic within a fuzzy space, utilizing natural and artificial language values to construct a three-dimensional model. The findings of the study demonstrate a cognitive elaboration of human perceptual states during a coma based on the cognitive levels of the soul (marātib al-nafs) in Avicenna’s ʿilm al-nafs, conceptualized within the 3D model. Specifically, the natural language values detail high intellectual perception, high imaginal perception, low or completely absent sensory perception, and a minimal connection with the physical body. The conclusion drawn from this study indicates a profound connection between Avicennian philosophy and contemporary cognitive studies.
